Welcome 2019 – Happy New Year

Here I sit, again, thinking I should write something wise, or timely, or exciting, or something…

But I am so dumbfounded by a blank screen, I don’t ever know where to start….for someone who rarely lacks for something to say, sitting in front of a blank screen seems to make my mind go blank as well. And yes, a blank sheet of paper in a typewrite used to do the same thing. Perhaps this is why I prefer photography and art rather than writing.

As we start the year 2019 I want to ask anyone who reads this to do a couple of things for me, for themselves, and for the good of the species and the planet…
Look up,

Look out,

See people.

Let your eyes look away from your phones/tablets/screens and notice people; look at them, meet their eyes with yours, and you know what? A smile is free….so smile at people. It can save a life.

Namaste.

It’s National Download Day!

Hah! Hadn’t heard of it before? Me neither…but I have now and I think it’s a great idea. It’s a good day to download those things you’ve been meaning to and also this would make a great time to look over those apps on your phone, tablet or computer and get rid of those you no longer, or never, use(d).

And…in the spirit of the little known holiday…I’m offering free downloads over on Patreon.com/Ryn1 so if you’re looking for a nice image to decorate the home-screen of your digital device, stop on over there and see if there’s anything you’d like. There are about five or six freebies scattered through the site so look through so you get to see them all. Oh! And did I mention the freebies are for one day only? Yup, they are free for National Download Day only. Namaste.

Two Days Until

We get to celebrate two events! On December 28th we get to celebrate both

National Call a Friend Day    AND    National Download Day!

Now…I have a long list of people I can call and I imagine you probably do too…so try to make good use of National Call a Friend Day and maybe call someone you haven’t spoken to in a long time. Life gets busy and we all get side-tracked (or is that only me?) so it’s totally understandable that we don’t call when we should….and then it gets awkward so we tend to put it off….then it gets even more awkward until it finally becomes an issue the size of Kilimanjaro and we can’t possibly be expected to climb that mountain. I mean, after all, who has mountain climbing gear just lying about?

Now…for National Download Day, I can do something about that! I am going to put as many free downloads as I can on my Patreon site for one day only! I will put images sized for  iPhones, Androids, iPads, and computer screens as free wallpaper for one day only as a celebration of such a cool day and as a late Christmas gift to all who venture near AND as a Thank You for all of you who have followed me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Etsy and/or Patreon — without you and your support none of this would be possible or even have a reason for being.

Sooo. remember December 28th 🙂 and I hope to see you on my Patreon site 🙂

If you enjoyed reading this please remember to share it with those you care about 🙂 Thank you 🙂  (the share buttons are just down below here)

Namaste.

Ace

Waking up to an unknown man standing at the foot of your bed is quite a shocking way to come to consciousness. It’s also unpleasant wondering how he got in, where he came from, or how long had he been watching me sleep? And rather frightening to consider who he was and what was his intention? I quickly shut my eyes again hoping he hadn’t seen me look at him and thus give me a moment to figure out what to do first. I opened my eyes just a slit to see if he had moved but he was gone! I looked all around in the dim room and there was no sign of him anywhere.

This continued on an irregular basis. On the third or fourth…or maybe even the fifth time, he spoke, “I won’t hurt you Ace, don’t worry, nothing and no one will ever hurt you. I’m protecting you.” and he was gone again.
I never cried out in the night, as scared as I was for a few moments, I never yelled for help or screamed. I don’t know why. Maybe I thought I was dreaming. Maybe I just wasn’t able to. I don’t know, but I got to the point where I would here footsteps walking down the hall coming toward my room. The sound would stop just outside my closed door. Then, I would hear the steps going around my bed, they would stop at the foot of my bed. If I opened my eyes, I would see him standing there, hands on either side of my foot rail, looking at me. Then, he would turn and walk around the other side of my bed and into the closet (see the image below).

IMG_6861No matter how fast I was or how often I tried, I never could see him open the doors. I never felt the breeze an opening or closing door creates.
After months of this, one morning, I finally had the presence of mind to ask my grandfather, “Who is the man that keeps coming into my room at night?” My grandpa nonchalantly asked what the man looked like. As I described my middle-of-the-night visitor my grandpa’s face got increasingly pale. He silently got up from the table where we were having breakfast, walked behind me, to the other side of me, then up the stairs. I hollered after him, “he’s gone now.” When my grandpa came back a few moments later, he placed a photograph in front of me. It was the man who came into my room! “That’s him!” I yelled with a little too much exuberance, “Who is he?”
My grandpa was very pale and visibly shaking as he replied, “Your Uncle Paul.”
I think it was my turn to get pale. My Uncle Paul died when I was two and a half years old.
Grandpa looked at me solemly and said, “He always called you Ace.” Which reminded me of what he said to me on one of his first visits, “I won’t hurt you Ace, don’t worry, nothing and no one will ever hurt you. I’m protecting you.” I’m almost 63, I think he’s done a pretty good job.

I’ll leave it to you to figure out what this was all about and/or how it could be. I never could explain it, I can only relate my experience. Namaste.

Rush to Extinction

After a longer than expected hiatus, I am back…Yay, Yippeeeee, wait…no horns blaring? No band playing? No fireworks? Did anyone miss me? Did anyone even notice I was gone? harrumph…

OK, so maybe my internet presence isn’t earth shattering, but that won’t stop me from sharing my insights on the craziness we’ve bought into. The advent of Apple’s iOS 11 and the concurrent (or nearly so) release of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the 10th anniversary release of the iPhone X is what has driven me out of my complacency and too-busy-grandma-hood to  point out some glaring issues here.

What’s the rush? Is it really necessary to bring out a new phone model — every  —   single —  year?    Even if you haven’t changed anything much? And the iPhone X is a joke! Seriously? It looks like you folks at Apple thought, “Oh crap! It’ sour 10th anniversary?!?!?!? What are we gonna do? We have to commemorate it somehow. Don’t we?!” No, you don’t, not when your flagship “new” phone isn’t even ready to work on the launch, nor afterward when it’s in the hands of the consumer.

What’s the rush? To release an – all – new – operating – system – fully redesigned…which led us all to think maybe our phone woes would be over. Our phones would work better, we’d never again drop a call or have someone say I can’t hear you….but no….instead we got iOS 11. Then we got iOS 11.0.1, then 11.0.2, 11.0.3 then onto 11.1! Surely this would be the last update we would need for awhile? (I can hear the laughter and the groans from here…) Noooo…shortly after here came iOS 11.1.1 – then 11.1.2 which really messed up my iPhone and iPad Pro both! But wait! not even two weeks later here came iOS 1.1.3! And now we are 2 months from the first time we were able to download iOS 11. Couldn’t they have just waited until December first to give us a bug-free iOS update?

Count those up, my friends…

iOS 11

iOS 11.0.1

iOS 11.0.2

iOS 11.0.3

iOS 11.1

iOS 11.1.1

iOS 11.1.2

iOS 11.1.3

Now we come to December 2017 and along with snow and two federally recognized holidays we also get….wait for it….

iOS 11.2 on the second day of the month!

iOS 11.2.1 five days later

iOS 11.2.2

iOS 11.2.3

iOS 11.2.4

iOS 11.2.5

iOS 11.2.6 in early February

I’ve gotten busy and lost track now…

iOS 11.3 on April 6, 2018 the 16th iteration of iOS 11!

that means that SIXTEEN TIMES every app on my iPhone had to also update! For those of you who don’t have unlimited data…I feel sorry for you!

What did that do to people’s cellphone bills and wifi bills who were on limited plans? I’m fairly certain Apple and it’s multi-millionaire corporate contingent don’t care. They are laughing all the way to the bank.

But this little-old-middle-America-grandma is vexed.

What’s the rush? Why is any one in America releasing for sale any item that is not user ready? When did we lower our expectations of purchasing working items? IF I charged you $250 and walked you into my massage studio, told you to disrobe, lie on the table and relax, I’ll be with you shortly then walked back in 90 minutes later and told you our time together was over and I hope you tell your friends about me…you would be furious, and you would certainly tell your friends all about me and advise them to avoid me like the plague! Yet you’ll run out to lay down over $ 1,000 for a phone that isn’t finished yet?

Come ON Apple! You’re supposed to be a company of innovators! How about finishing what you start BEFORE you try to sell it to us?

For that matter…HOW about ALL you technology companies take a year off and instead of looking for bigger better things to make…let’s get ALL AMERICANS on the same page with the technology that exists! I remember when anyone from the age of 2 years old and older could pick up that old black handset and get an operator to make a phone call. There are Android based phones out there that I can’t even figure out how to answer when they ring.  I’ve had Android users pick up my iPhone when it rang, look at it in wonder and a little trepidation, and shrug as they hand it to me and say, “Sorry, I don’t know how to answer this one.”

God help us all in a true emergency.

Square Nails and Deck Shoes

In 1963 or so there was an abandoned school house just a few yards from where I lived. Far enough away to be safe from the prying eyes of adults if we were careful, but close enough that we kids had to keep our exuberance under control so as not to be heard. The old yellow schoolhouse was “off limits” to us. We played there a lot, in complete secrecy, when we were children.

It was slated for demolition since it was in disuse for so long. As sad as I was to see it being demolished, I was also very curious about the demolition process. Over the weeks it took the men to dismantle the old yellow brick building I would hang around watching. I would hang around on the fringe of all the activity, watching, trying to stay out of the way. Actually, I tried to escape any notice at all for fear they would send me far enough away that I couldn’t see anything. Continue reading
